Synopsis Harriet (2019)

Minty (Cynthia Erivo), a slave on a Southern plantation, lays in the field having flashes of images cross her mind. Since a head injury from a beating by her slave-owners, she has had visions, flashes of the future, which she believes are messages from God. Her husband, John Tubman (Zackary Momoh), a free man, arrives to tell her good news: they have secured a letter from a lawyer proving that Harriet's mother was supposed to be freed, and that therefore her children are free as well. When they approach Mr. Brodess, the owner of the plantation, he tears the letter up and cruelly denies the request. Minty cries and prays to God for Mr. Brodess to die - which he does shortly after. His son, Gideon (Joe Alwyn), who grew up with Minty, heard her praying and is furious - he decides he's going to sell Minty downriver, where she will never see her family or husband again. She decides to flee to the north, and John insists on going with her. Knowing if he is caught aiding her he will lose his freedom, Harriet leaves without him, managing only a silent goodbye to her mother, Rit (Vanessa Bell Calloway), from a distance. She goes to her father, Ben (Clarke Peters) who directs her to the beginning of the Underground Railroad. Partway into the journey, she is caught by Gideon and his men on a bridge. He tells her he won't sell her anymore, but she tells him she'd rather live free or die, and jumps off the bridge into the river. The men believe she died, but she survives and travels all the way to the north on a very dangerous journey all by herself.

Once she arrives she meets with William Still (Leslie Odom Jr.), of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery society, who helps organize the Underground Railroad. He helps Minty get settled in her life as a free woman, and has her pick out a new name: Harriet, her mother's middle name, and Tubman, her husband's last name. He introduces her to Marie Buchanon (Janelle Monae), who owns and runs an living space for the freed; Marie grows fond of Harriet and the two form a friendship.

One year later, Harriet has sent word to her husband and family that she's alive, but has not heard anything back. She tells William that she needs to go back to get her husband, but he insists it's too dangerous. She persists, and Mare and William help her get prepared to return to the south using fake papers. Meanwhile, Gideon and his mother Eliza (Jennifer Nettles) are in a state of disarray, with the plantation not making as much money as it should. They've decided to sell several of Harriet's bothers to make ends meet. When Harriet finally makes it to John, he tells her that when he thought she was dead he remarried and is now expecting a child with his new wife. Harriet is disgusted and betrayed, but John points out that she's the one that left him. Devastated, Harriet goes to her father and wonders why God sent her back there - but then her father tells her that her brothers are being sold and they need to flee north. Harriet realizes this is why she came back - not for her husband, but to help her family. Harriet decides to lead her brothers and some others back through the Underground Railroad. She wants to take her sister, but her sister is too scared to flee and has stayed at the Brodess compound. Harriet's mother has been freed and is now staying with her father, but he says he won't leave while any of his children are still there.

Walter (Henry Hunter Hall), a young black man, spots Harriet and her crew and reports back to Gideon about their whereabouts in exchange for money. He also brings along Abraham (Willie Raysor), a violent man who, though black, is known for catching runaway slaves. They track Harriet and her group. In the dead of night, they are headed towards the bridge, but Harriet has a vision of the men at the bridge, so instead she wades into the river. At first her crew thinks she's insane, but when she's able to cross the river, they follow her, in awe. Walter witnessed this and decides to lie and not tell Gideon where they went. Harriet successfully gets her group north, and becomes one of the most successful conductors on the Underground Railroad, going back and forth bringing multiple groups north. In the south, the angry plantation crew complain of the mysterious "Moses" who is helping their slaves escape- they believe him to be a white abolitionist.

Harriet receives word from her father that her sister has died, and is devastated. She tells William that they failed her. She meets other abolitionists and gives an impassioned speech on why they must keep fighting. Sometime later, the Fugitive Slave Act is enacted, which allows southerners to come to the north and recapture slaves who are already free. William tries to get Harriet on the ship with all the freed slaves that is headed to Canada, but Harriet goes back to say goodbye to Marie, only to find Gideon and Abraham beating her for Harriet's location. Marie sees Harriet and notions for her to get out, saying her job is more important than all of them. They leave, but not before Abraham kills Marie, devastating Harriet.

Harriet is living in Canada when she has a vision of her father in danger. She decides to once again go back to the south. She finds her father and tells him that he is about to be arrested for assisting slaves escaping, so he and Rit - who is shocked to see Harriet alive and well - decide to go. First, Harriet decides she must rescue her deceased sister's daughter, who is still living in the Brodess house. During the evening, Gideon and Eliza meet with angry debtors who say they are owed money, but Gideon and Eliza insist that it is all Moses's fault for stealing all their slaves. While they are out, Harriet enters their home, holds the children at gunpoint, and ties them up allowing her to leave with her niece. Harriet has a group of slaves in addition to her family that she leads out of the south. Gideon and Abraham track them down, and Harriet has Walter continue to take them to freedom while she stays behind and lets them chase after her. Gideon demands Harriet be taken alive, but when Abraham angrily tries to shoot her, Gideon shoots him in the head. Harriet is able to get the drop on Gideon, shooting him in the hand. She has him on his knees at gunpoint, but rather than kill him, tells him he's going to die on the Civil War battlefield. She tells him god did not intend people to own people, and triumphantly steals his horse and rides off.

Later in 1863, two years into the Civil War, Harriet leads a raid that frees 750 slaves. She returns home to Canada where she lives with most of her family that she rescued, a free woman.

Summary Barry Lyndon (1975)

An Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband's aristocratic position in 18th-century England.

In the eighteenth century, in a small village in Ireland, Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal) is a young farm boy in love with his cousin Nora Brady (Gay Hamilton). When Nora gets engaged to British Captain John Quin (Leonard Rossiter), Barry challenges him to a duel of pistols. He wins and escapes to Dublin, but is robbed on the road. Without an alternative, Barry joins the British Army to fight in the Seven Years War. He deserts and is forced to join the Prussian Army, where he saves the life of his Captain and becomes his protégé and spy of Irish gambler Chevalier de Balibari (Patrick Magee). He helps Chevalier and becomes his associate until he decides to marry the wealthy Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson). They move to England and Barry, in his obsession of nobility, dissipates her fortune and makes a dangerous and revengeful enemy.

The rise and fall of the adult life of Irishman Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal), who, in his later life, would be known as Barry Lyndon, from the mid to late eighteenth century, is presented. Growing up in humble means, largely due to the early death of his aspiring lawyer father, the potential family breadwinner, Barry strives to live up to the standards of being a gentleman in every respect of the word, including monetarily. He leads a disjointed early adult life in trying to find his way, sometimes being unfairly given some hard knocks as the ways of the world work around him. He seems to find his stride in falling in love with wealthy and married Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson), who he ends up marrying following the death of her elderly first husband, Sir Charles Lyndon (Frank Middlemass). In taking over the affairs of the Lyndon mansion, Barry is able to live a means of his liking, all off the Lyndon's now quickly dwindling wealth due to Barry's squandering. As Barry is without money of his own, Mrs. Barry (Marie Kean) encourages her son to work toward a peerage as a means to have money of his own, as she fears that if Lady Lyndon were to die, she would leave all of what would remain of the Lyndon wealth to her son, Barry's stepson, Lord Bullingdon (Leon Vitali), with whom Barry has always had an antagonistic relationship to the point of Lord Bullingdon wanting revenge on the woes that his stepfather has created in their lives. Outwardly, Lord Bullingdon may seem to be the cause of Barry's fall, however, it may be more attributed to Barry being unable to adapt to any of the lives into which he is thrust to truly reach his goal of being a gentleman.

A gentlemanly rogue travels the battlefields and parlors of eighteenth century Europe determined to make for himself the life of a nobleman through seduction, gambling, and duelling in this methodical movie showing the rhythm and life of the period.

Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal) is a young, roguish Irishman who's determined, in any way, to make a life for himself as a wealthy nobleman. Enlisting in the British Army, fighting in the Seven Years War in Europe, Barry deserts from the British Army, joins the Prussian Army, gets promoted to the rank of a spy, then becomes pupil to con artist and gambler Chevalier de Balibari (Patrick Magee). Barry then lies, dupes, duels, and seduces his way up the social ladder and enters into a lustful but loveless marriage to a wealthy countess named Lady Lyndon (Marisa Berenson), takes the name of "Barry Lyndon", settles in England with wealth and power beyond his wildest dreams, then slowly falls dramatically into ruin.

Synopsis Barry Lyndon (1975)

PART I: By what means Redmond Barry acquired the style and title of Barry Lyndon.

In the opening scene, set in 1750s Ireland, the father of Irishman Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal) is killed in a duel by a businessman over a disputed sale of some horses. This detail is related by the film's narrator (the voice of Michael Horden), who comments ironically on the events that transpire. The widow (Marie Kean), disdaining offers of marriage, devotes herself to the raising of her son.

While still in his teens, Barry falls in love with his older cousin, Nora Brady (Gay Hamilton). A wealthy English army officer named Captain John Quin (Leonard Rossiter) meets and begins courting Nora, leading the jealous Barry to challenge Quin to a duel. Barry's second in the duel is his older friend, Captain Jack Grogan (Godfrey Quigley), and also present are Barry's cousins, Ulick and Mick Brady. They fire pistols at ten paces. When Barry's gunfire knocks Quin flat, the Brady cousins pronounce him dead and urge Barry to flee to avoid a murder charge. Believing that he has killed Quin and will be arrested by the British for murder, Barry flees.

On the road to Dublin, Barry is robbed and his horse stolen by a middle-aged highwayman (Arthur O'Sullivan) and the man's son. Penniless, Barry manages to stop at a nearby town where he attends a gathering of locals where a British army recruiting officer is advertising enlistments for men in the Royal British Army, promising glory in the current war in continental Europe as well as a lifelong pension. Barry enlists in the British army and finds himself in boot camp. During training, Barry gets into a brawl with a local bully named O'Toole (Pat Roach), and is forced to fight bare-knuckle against the guy. Barry wins the fight by dodging all of O'Toole's blows and knocks out his opponent, which earns him popularity from the rest of his fellow recruits.

After basic training, Barry and his unit are sent to France to fight in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) between the alliance of Great Britain and Prussia and the alliance of France, Austria and Russia. While still in a training camp, Barry is reunited with his old friend, Captain Grogan. One evening in the privacy of Grogan's tent, he tells Barry that Captain Quin is not dead after all and has married Nora. The whole duel was a ploy by Nora's relatives to make Barry flee from Ireland so she can marry Quin.

During Barry's first "taste of conflict" during a skirmish on August 1, 1759 at the Battle of Minden, Grogan is killed, along with many other British soldiers, during the battle with a French rearguard. Over the next year-and-a-half, Barry becomes fed up with the brutality of war. One day, Barry takes an opportunity when he is able to steal the uniform and horse of Lt. Jonathan Fakenham, an army dispatcher, while Frakenham is bathing in a nearby stream with his gay lover.

Posing as a British officer, Barry travels through the allied German states along the Rhine, hoping to get to neutral Holland and from there hopefully get back to Ireland. Barry has a brief affair with a local German woman (Diana Koerner) whom he shacks up with while her husband is away at war.

Later, while traveling up the Rhine River to the north on horseback, Barry meets a Prussian officer, Captain Potzdorf (Hardy Kruger) and his staff, who quickly sees through his disguise. That evening at a local tavern, Potzdorf becomes more nosy and asks Barry many questions about himself and his "mission" as a courier. After catching Barry in a series of lies, Potzdorf exposes Barry as a British army deserter. Given the choice of joining the Prussian army or being turned back over to the British where he will no doubt be executed as a deserter, Barry enlists in his second army. After Barry saves Potzdorf's life by dragging him out of a burning house during a battle with French troops, Barry is promoted and receives a special commendation from the Prussian king, Frederick the Great.

Two years later, after the war ends in 1763, Barry is employed by the Prussian Minister of Police, Potzdorf's uncle. It is arranged for him to become the servant of the Chevalier de Balibari (Patrick Magee), a professional gambler. The Prussians suspect that he is a spy and Barry is assigned to try to determine if he is. However, Barry discovers that the Chevalier is an expatriate Irishman like himself. After an attack of conscience, Barry immediately confesses his mission to the Chevalier and becomes his protege while continuing his charade of spying on him for Potzdor. Barry assists the Chevalier in cheating at card games, but when the Prince of Tübingen (Wolf Kahler) suspects the truth after losing a large sum of money, Potzdorf decides to expel the Chevalier from the country. Barry relays this to the Chevalier who persuades Barry to take advantage of this to flee Prussia. The Chevalier flees from his house during the night and crosses the border. The next day, Barry impersonates the Chevalier by donning his wig and clothes, so when Potzdorf arrives to take him to the border of Prussia and Saxony, Barry rejoins the Chevalier, both free at last.

Over the next several years, Barry and the Chevalier become successful gamblers as they travel through Europe and gain access to high society. They wander from place to place, cheating the nobles at card games. Barry proves to be very useful; when a loser refuses to pay his debts, Barry's excellent swordsmanship, which he learned during his military service, convinces him otherwise. Seeing that his life of being a drifter and gambler is going nowhere, Barry decides to marry into wealth. Some time later, at a gambling table in Spa, Belgium, he encounters the beautiful and wealthy Countess of Lyndon (Marisa Berenson). After Barry has an argument with Lady Lyndon's aged and terminally sick husband (Frank Middlemass), he suffers a heart attack and dies.

PART II: Containing an account of the misfortunes and disasters which befell Barry Lyndon.

The following year (on June 15, 1773), Lady Lyndon and Barry are married at a small church in London and Barry takes her last name of Lyndon and settles in England with wealth at last. The Chevalier is the best man at Barry's wedding and afterwords, he wishes Barry luck with his new life and goes off on his own. Young Lord Bullingdon (Dominic Savage), Lady Lyndon's 10-year-old son by Sir Charles, hates Barry from the beginning, knowing that Barry is an adventurer and "common opportunist" and is not in love with his mother.

In this second part, Barry undergoes a character transformation from being ambitious, naive and innocent, into a self-destructive and arrogant man who becomes corrupted by his newly acquired wealth and power. The marriage between Barry and Lady Lyndon is not a happy one, although they welcome a new son born the following year, whom they name Bryan Patrick. Barry is unfaithful to her, and expends most of Lady Lyndon's fortune in an effort to ingratiate himself with those who could assist him in his quest to become a peer of the realm while keeping his wife and children in dull seclusion. One day, she observes Barry consorting with her maid and feels humiliated, but when Barry approaches her in her bath to apologize, she forgives him. However, young Bullingdon does not forgive Barry, and when he reminds Lady Lyndon that Sir Charles is his true father, Barry takes him out of the room to horsewhip him.

As the years pass, Barry dotes on the sweet-natured Bryan, while Bullingdon's hatred intensifies. Barry brings his mother over from Ireland to live with him on the estate grounds. After meeting with Lady Lyndon as well as her son Lord Bullingdon (now a teenager played by Leon Vitali), Barry's mother privately warns her son that his position is precarious. If Lady Lyndon were to die, all of her wealth would go to her first-born son Lord Bullingdon; Barry and his son Bryan would be left penniless. Barry's mother advises him to obtain a noble title to protect himself. Following his mother's advice, Barry cultivates the acquaintance of the influential Lord Wendover (André Morell) with this goal in mind, spending much money to grease his way to the top of the social ladder. Barry gains access to more of high society and even once meets with the British king George III at a reception in London. To that end, Barry discusses the issue with former government minister, Lord Hallam, who refers him to Gustavus Adolphus, the thirteenth Earl of Wendover. The Earl, making no promises, is willing to consider backing Barry, but says that there must be no question of his worthiness. Barry spends more money lavishly to buy lands and expensive paintings, to entertain those most likely to advance him and make bribes in high places. One day in the boys' schoolroom, when Bullingdon and the usually congenial Bryan quarrel, Barry whips Bullingdon. The viscount, now grown, threatens that next time he will kill Barry.

One day during a lavish birthday party for Lady Lyndon that Barry holds in her honor, Lord Bullingdon crashes the party and announces his hatred of his stepfather. Bullingdon vows to leave his home and never return as long as his mother is married to Redmond Barry whom he continues to badmouth as a "Irish underling". The hot-tempered Barry physically attacks Lord Bullingdon and beats him up in front of all of the important guests which puts a quick end to the party. Humiliated by this public brawl, Bullingdon never the less makes good on his word and leaves the family estate and England itself for parts unknown. However, Barry's public cruelty towards his unruly stepson loses him all the powerful friends he has worked so hard to make and he is shunned socially. From then on, Barry is considered an outcast by good society, although they do not admit this to his face. At once, his bills become due and are paid by Lady Lyndon's income.

In contrast to the mistreatment he gave Lord Bullingdon, Barry proves to be a doting and compassionate father to Bryan. Barry now focuses all his attention on raising his son Bryan. Over the next year-and-a-half, Barry cannot refuse the young boy anything and spoils him every chance he gets, giving Bryan everything that he never had as a young child growing up in poverty in Ireland. Barry even purchases a pony for Bryan to ride despite the fact that the young boy is not a good enough rider. Bryan says that all he wants is a horse (not a pony), so he can go hunting with his father. However, on Bryan's 9th birthday, despite his parents stern orders not to ride his new horse without the company of his parents, the spoiled and rotten boy disobeys them anyway and is thrown while riding from his horse and dies three days later from a head injury.

The grief-stricken Barry turns to drink and isolates himself even further, while Lady Lyndon seeks solace in religion, assisted by the Reverend Samuel Runt (Murray Melvin), tutor first to Lord Bullingdon and then to Bryan. Mrs. Barry takes over the management of Castle Hackton while Barry and Lady Lyndon mourn. After a few weeks, Mrs. Barry dismisses Reverend Runt partly because they no longer need a tutor (mostly because of Barry's past spending habits), partly for what she says is fear that his influence is making Lady Lyndon worse. Plunging even deeper into grief, she attempts suicide by taking poison, but survives and is taken to a nearby clinic to recover. The Reverend and the family's accountant and emissary Graham (Philip Stone) then seek out Lord Bullingdon. Upon hearing of these events, Lord Bullingdon returns to England where he finds Barry drunk in a gentleman's club, mourning the loss of his son rather than being with Lady Lyndon. Bullingdon demands "satisfaction" for Barry's public assault by challenging him to a duel.

The duel with pistols is held in a tithe barn. A coin-toss gives Bullingdon the right of first fire, but he nervously misfires his pistol as he prepares to shoot. Barry, reluctant to shoot Bullingdon, magnanimously fires into the ground, but the unmoved Bullingdon refuses to let the duel end, claiming he has not received "satisfaction". In the second round, Bullingdon shoots Barry in his left leg. At a nearby inn, a surgeon informs Barry that the leg will need to be amputated below the knee if he is to survive.

While Barry is recovering, Bullingdon re-takes control of the Lyndon estate. A few days later, Bullingdon sends a very nervous Graham to the cottage where Barry is recovering to offer him a deal: Bullingdon will grant Barry a small annuity of 500 guineas for life if he leaves England forever and ends his marriage to Lady Lyndon; otherwise, with his credit and bank accounts exhausted, his creditors will see to it that he is put in jail. Wounded in spirit and body and with no friends left, Barry reluctantly accepts the deal. Barry goes back to Ireland with his mother to recover from his injuries. He is then said to have gone back to the European continent to resume his former profession of gambler, though without his former success. From there, history loses touch with Redmond Barry's life after that. He never sees Lady Lyndon again.

In the final scene, set another few years later in December 1789, a gray and middle-aged Lady Lyndon is going over her finances with Lord Bullingdon, Reverend Runt and Graham. She then pauses to sign Barry's annuity cheque to be sent to Ireland. Bullingdon looks over at her sorrowful face and comes to realize that she indeed loved Redmond Barry despite his faults. Mother and son say nothing to each other and continue to review their financial papers.

EPILOGUE: "It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarreled; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now."

Summary The Trouble with Harry (1955)

The trouble with Harry is that he is dead and, while no one really minds, everyone feels responsible. After Harry's body is found in the woods, several locals must determine not only how and why he was killed but what to do with the body.

There is a dead well-dressed man in a meadow clearing in the hills above a small Vermont town. Captain Albert Wiles, who stumbles across the body and finds by the man's identification that his name is Harry Worp, believes he accidentally shot Harry dead while he was hunting rabbits. Captain Wiles wants to hide the body as he feels it is an easier way to deal with the situation than tell the authorities. While Captain Wiles is in the adjacent forest, he sees other people stumble across Harry, most of whom don't seem to know him or care or notice that he's dead. One person who does see Captain Wiles there is spinster Ivy Gravely, who vows to keep the Captain's secret about Harry. Captain Wiles also secretly sees a young single mother, Jennifer Rogers, who is the one person who does seem to know Harry and seems happy that he's dead. Later, another person who stumbles across both Harry and Captain Wiles is struggling artist Sam Marlowe, to who Captain Wiles tells the entire story of what he has seen thus far. Over the course of the day, several revelations come to light that question if Captain Wiles actually killed Harry. Sam, Mrs. Rogers, Captain Wiles and Miss Gravely's individual and collective actions in the matter of Harry take into account friendship, self-preservation, the path of least resistance, love and a lot of realizations about what their past actions will mean. Their work may all be for naught if Deputy Sheriff Calvin Wiggs, the closest thing to law enforcement in their town, finds out about Harry.

In the woods outside a small town in Vermont, several people, in turn, stumble across a dead body, that of Harry. Captain Wiles is convinced that he shot him accidentally while hunting, and tries to hide the body. Things quickly get rather complicated.

Trouble erupts in a small, quiet New England town when a man's body is found in the woods. The problem is that almost everyone in town thinks that they had something to do with his death.

Young Arnie, walking through the Vermont woods, hears some threats, and then gunshots. Investigating, he finds the body of Harry Worp, and he thinks Harry has been murdered. He tells his mother, Jennifer Rogers, who recognizes the man as her ex-husband. She, along with the elderly Captain Wiles and the spinster Ivy Gravely, believe they will be prime suspects when Harry's body is found, so they conspire to bury it, with the help of artist Sam Marlowe.

Synopsis The Trouble with Harry (1955)

One morning, in a forested area near the village of Highwater, Vermont, four-year-old Arnie Rogers is playing when he stumbles across the body of a dead man. After Arnie rushes off to get his mother, retired seaman Captain Albert Wiles, who has been unsuccessfully hunting rabbits, cleans his rifle. Having shot a beer can and a "no shooting" sign, Capt. Wiles is lamenting his luck when he stumbles across the corpse. Fearing that his third shot killed the man, who has a wound on his forehead, Capt. Wiles searches his pockets and finds a letter identifying him as Harry Worp of Boston. As Capt. Wiles is dragging Harry away to bury him, he is stopped by spinster Miss Ivy Graveley, who calmly asks him what the trouble is. Miss Graveley, who was out for a walk, is unperturbed by Capt. Wiles's situation, and agrees with him that he should bury Harry without involving the authorities, as the death was accidental.

Miss Graveley leaves after inviting Capt. Wiles for tea later that day, but before Capt. Wiles can begin digging, Arnie returns with his mother, Jennifer Rogers. The captain quickly hides behind a tree, and is pleased to hear Jennifer, who recognizes Harry, express delight that he is dead and instruct Arnie to forget that he saw the body. After Jennifer and Arnie leave, Capt. Wiles is forced to continue hiding when Dr. Greenbow, engrossed in a book, wanders by but does not see Harry, and a tramp also comes by and steals Harry's shoes.

While the captain falls asleep, in the village, eccentric painter Sam Marlowe cheerfully reprimands Emporium store owner Mrs. Wiggs for not being able to sell his abstract paintings at her roadside stand. While the pair are inside the store, however, they ignore a millionaire, who has stopped while driving by and wishes to buy the paintings.

Soon after, Sam walks through the woods with his sketchbook and comes across the dead body, of whom he draws a portrait. The captain wakes up and explains his situation to Sam, who reluctantly agrees to help him bury the corpse, provided that Jennifer does not intend to notify the police. Capt. Wiles decides that Sam is right and goes off to dine with Miss Graveley while Sam introduces himself to Jennifer, whom he has admired from afar. Jennifer calmly takes Sam's unusual manner in stride and explains that after her first husband, Arnie's father, died shortly after their marriage, she learned that she was pregnant. Harry, the older brother of Jennifer's husband, decided that it was his duty to marry her, and although she did not love him, Jennifer agreed for the sake of her child. On their wedding night, however, Harry never came up to their hotel room, and Jennifer learned that he had read an ominous horoscope, advising him not to undertake any long-term projects. Repulsed, Jennifer left Harry, changed her name and moved to Vermont. That morning, however, Harry found her and insisted that she return to him because he was lonely. Refusing, Jennifer hit him over the head with a milk bottle and the dazed Harry wandered off. Theorizing that Capt. Wiles's shot finished off Harry, Sam asks if Jennifer minds a quiet burial for Harry, and Jennifer gives her assent.

Meanwhile, the flirtatious captain is enjoying his luncheon with Miss Graveley when Arnie arrives with a dead rabbit, which Capt. Wiles happily realizes he shot that morning. Capt. Wiles then joins Sam in the woods, where they bury Harry in a huge hole. After they are done, however, Capt. Wiles deduces that he could not have shot Harry if his third and last shot felled the rabbit instead, and persuades a tired Sam to dig up Harry so they can examine him. Upon looking closely, Sam decides that Harry died from a blow to the head and wonders if Jennifer killed him. Determined to protect Jennifer, Sam and the captain again bury Harry.

Later that afternoon, Capt. Wiles talks with Miss Graveley, who confesses her fear that she killed Harry during her morning walk in the woods. She describes how the addled Harry, believing that she was his wife, dragged her into the bushes, and she stunned him with a blow to the head with her sturdy hiking shoe. Despite the captain's misgivings, Miss Graveley insists that she must tell the authorities, and they go to the woods, where they dig up Harry.

Meanwhile, Sam is at Jennifer's house, where the couple admits that they are comfortable together, despite having known each other for only a short time. Their conversation is interrupted by Capt. Wiles and Miss Graveley, who arrive covered with dirt and tell them of Harry's latest dis-internment. The group then concludes that Harry should be re-buried, so that the details of Jennifer's marriage to him will not become public.

After burying the body yet again, the quartet is returning to the village when Mrs. Wiggs tells them that the millionaire has come back and wants to buy Sam's paintings. In the store, Sam refuses the millionaire's offer of money and instead asks his friends what they want. Upon agreeing on fresh strawberries every month for Jennifer, a chemistry set for Arnie, a cash register for Mrs. Wiggs, shooting clothes for Capt. Wiles and a hope chest for Miss Graveley, Sam whispers his own request to the millionaire. After the millionaire and his chauffeur leave, Calvin, Mrs. Wiggs's son and a deputy sheriff, arrives with the news that he found the tramp with the stolen shoes. The quartet beats a hasty retreat, but after they depart, Calvin finds Sam's sketchbook with the portrait of Harry, which matches the tramp's description of the corpse.

Meanwhile, at Jennifer's house, Jennifer agrees to marry Sam, which delights everyone until they realize that she cannot legally marry again until she proves that Harry is dead. Dragging themselves back into the woods, the friends dig up Harry and are startled by the sudden appearance of Dr. Greenbow, who believes that they have just come across Harry and agrees to examine him at Jennifer's house. There, the friends are attempting to clean Harry so that the doctor will not suspect that he has been buried several times already when they are interrupted by Calvin. They quickly hide Harry in the bathtub and scatter his clothes around the house, after which a suspicious Calvin interrogates Sam. Sam casually manages to alter his drawing so that it no longer resembles Harry, and as the doctor arrives, Capt. Wiles steals Harry's shoes out of Calvin's car so that Calvin will not have any other evidence.

After Calvin finally leaves, the friends are astounded when Greenbow announces that Harry died from a heart attack. Once the doctor departs, the friends decide to take Harry back to the woods and have Arnie, who has a tenuous grasp of the passage of time, discover him again, so that they can alert the police. In the morning, the quartet watches as Arnie finds Harry, then rushes off to get Jennifer. Before they disperse, however, Capt. Wiles questions Sam about his request from the millionaire, and Sam happily reveals that he asked for a double bed.

The film closes with the text proclaiming: "The Trouble with Harry is over".

Summary Larry Crowne (2011)

After losing his job, a middle-aged man reinvents himself by going back to college.

Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he's worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves...often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.

He's Larry Crowne, unemployed after years as a Navy cook and then a job in big-box retail. He enrolls in community college to be more employable, taking informal speaking, economics 101, and composition. To save money, he parks his SUV and buys a motor scooter, which gains him entrée into a group of young students. She's Mercy Tainot, dissatisfied with teaching and with her marriage to a writer turned blogger. Larry's in Mercy's speech class: he's stiff, by the book, dull. She's cranky and dismissive. Can he find a new place in the world, and can she rediscover the rewards of teaching (and life)? One night he sees her sitting at a bus stop; self-discovery begins.

Synopsis Larry Crowne (2011)

Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is an employee at a retail store. He is well-liked and friendly, and a regular employee of the month. He is called to a meeting, but is told he's being let go, do to lack of a college degree.

Despondent, Larry heads home. He starts calling on retail stores for jobs, but is unsuccessful. He tries to refinance his house, but is upside-down. He talks to his neighbor Lamar (Cedric the Entertainer), who suggests going back to college. Larry visits the local college (East Valley Community) and meets Dean Dave Busik (Holmes Osborne), who befriends Larry and suggests a few classes. While fueling his gas guzzling SUV, he spots guys riding economical scooters, and barters for one from Lamar. Lamar runs a garage sale every day.

Meanwhile, we meet Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), a public speaking teacher at East Valley, who laments her profession. Larry meets Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a fellow student and scooter-driver. Larry arrives late for Mercedes's class, and she tries to dissuade them from attending so early in the morning. At an Econ class later in the day, Talia sits by Larry and Lala (Maria Canals-Barrera), who is in Mercedes's class as well. The Econ teacher is Dr. Ed Matsutani (George Takei), who also tries to scare away students.

Mercedes's next class is under-attended, and she cancels it. She returns home and starts drinking. Her husband Dean (Bryan Cranston) is a blog writer, but spends his time looking at online porn. They argue about it, and she hangs her head.

The next day, Larry does a presentation for his speaking class, but bombs. The other students are equally dull. During Econ, Larry gets busted for texting with Talia, who invites Larry to ride scooters with her "gang". She calls him Lance Corona, and as they ride, other scooters join them. Larry takes them to his favorite diner and Lamar's (permanent) yard sale. The scooter gang (The Street Patrol) comes into his house and gives him a haircut and a room makeover, initiating him into the group. The leader, Dell Gordo (Wilmer Valderrama), welcomes him into the gang and advises Larry not to fall for Talia.

On the way to school, Larry pulls alongside Mercedes and helps her re-program her GPS. Larry is doing well in econ, but keeps getting busted for texting. Larry's friend Frank (Ian Gomez), who runs the diner, offers him a job to help make ends meet. Larry's new friends and work schedule make it hard for him to make classes. He misses Mercedes's class, and she tells him not to miss any more classes. She gets the wrong idea about him, and Larry's recounting of Talia rearranging his bedroom reinforces the idea.

Mercedes and Dean argue on date night, and Dean insults her. She demands to be let out of the car, and Larry's scooter gang comes by. Larry gives her a ride home, and they pass by Dean, getting arrested for DUI. Mercedes is greatly cheered by the sight. She's drunk, and Larry helps her home. She makes a pass at Larry, but he resists after one kiss. When Dean returns home, hung over, the next morning, he finds his stuff out on the lawn.

Mercedes asks Larry not to brag about "almost scoring" with her. Later, he strategically forecloses on his house, applying lessons learned from Economics. Talia clarifies her relationship with Larry to Mercedes, and she is surprised. Talia is working on a new business, and Larry helps her. Dell is becoming increasingly jealous of Talia and Larry.

At Larry's foreclosure garage sale, he sees that the pizza delivery guy is his old co-worker - times are tough.

Larry and Mercedes are both trying to rebuild their lives (separately). Larry passes his final exams, and Mercedes visits him at work, and sparks fly. The next term, Larry takes class with Dr. Matsutani again, and leaves Mercedes GPS directions to his place, next to Talia's new store. They embrace, and go inside. The end.

Summary Who's Harry Crumb? (1989)

Harry Crumb is a bumbling and inept private investigator who is hired to solve the kidnapping of a young heiress which he's not expected to solve because his employer is the mastermind behind the kidnapping.

Harry is the latest generation of the Crumbs, famous and extremely talented detectives. Unfortunately talent seems to have skipped a generation and Harry is reduced to "gumshoe" work at a remote branch of the Crumb detective agency. Back at headquarters, Crumb executive Elliot Draison hatches an evil plan which requires the inclusion of an incompetent detective. With Harry Crumb on the case Draison thinks everything will run fine for him. Despite his best efforts Crumb actually makes some headway in the case...

Synopsis Who's Harry Crumb? (1989)

Over the opening credits, a young woman named Jennifer Downing (Renee Coleman), is kidnapped by an unseen person while taking a mud bath at a spa.

The next day at the Crumb and Crumb Investigations in downtown Los Angeles, Jennifer's father P.J. Downing (Barry Corbin), a wealthy shipping owner, and his trophy wife, Helen (Annie Potts), meet with Eliot Draisen (Jeffery Jones), the president the detective agency. P.J. wants to hire Eliot Draisen himself to investigate Jennifer's kidnapping, but Eliot claims he has no one available to take the Downing case. Upon P.J.'s insistence, Eliot decides to assign Harry Crumb (John Candy), the grandson of the firm's two founders.

That evening in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Harry, disguised as an elderly window washer (with black-face makeup, a fake bush mustache, fake eyebrows, and a gray 'fright wig' resembling the hairstyle of boxing promoter Don King), is ten stories up alongside a seedy high-rise hotel and photographing a couple having an affair. When the couple move into another room, Harry rocks the suspended platform like a pendulum. He falls off the platform, grabs a rope and swings through an apartment window, landing in an easy chair.

The next morning, Harry shows the photographs to his wealthy client, Mrs. MacIntyre (Michelle Goodear), only to discover he followed her by mistake. He gets called to come to the head office and takes a bus to Los Angeles, California. Upon meeting Eliot Draisen, Harry recites the Jennifer Downing case from memory. When he asks why there was no reference to the stolen jewels, Eliot informs him it is a kidnapping case. Harry leaves and Eliot telephones Dwayne (Doug Steckler), the animal trainer who is keeping Jennifer Downing in a cage, to tell him Harry is a bigger idiot than he had hoped for.

At the Downing mansion, Harry gets his crotch soaked while standing over a sprinkler before meeting Nikki Downing (Shawnee Smith), Jennifer's younger teenage sister and Helen Downing, Jennifer's stepmother. Harry then meets P.J. in his study, who is assembling fishing lures. Harry shows off more of his bad-luck clumsiness when he puts his hand in an aquarium and a dog fish latches on to it. As P.J. tells him Jennifer is his favorite daughter, Harry leans on the desk and impales his hands on several of P.J.'s fish hook lures. Harry looks out a window to see Helen flirting with her tennis coach, Vince Barnes (Tim Thomerson). As Harry throws darts at a nearby dartboard, he hits his final bull's eye dart a little too hard in which the dart board falls off the wall and crashes on top of one of P.J.'s mini ship models.

Harry, disguised as De Roach, a bearded Hungarian hair stylist wearing blue leather with a shaved head, goes to the spa to interview the woman who gave Jennifer the mud bath that ended in her kidnapping. While re-enacting the crime, Harry leans over a mud encrusted woman and his fake chest hair falls into her crotch. Slamming his fake hair back on his face as a beard, Harry learns from the attendant that Helen insisted Jennifer take her spa appointment on the day she was kidnapped.

That night, P.J. receives a ransom note requesting $10 million. As he and Harry confer, Detective Casey (Valri Bromfield), a hard-boiled LAPD female police detective, arrives to take control of the case, stating her belief that all private investigators are incompetent slime. Meanwhile, Eliot meets Helen in the horse stables to inform her of the ransom note before pouncing on her. She fights off his romantic advances, telling him he is not rich enough to sleep with her. After dinner, Harry befriends Nikki, who tells him Helen is a money-grubbing nymphomaniac. Harry voices his suspicions that Helen is the kidnapper and makes Nikki his assistant.

The next day, Harry and Nikki use cardboard periscopes to spy on Helen and Vince Barnes as they soak in a hot tub at the marina. Harry is too far away to hear Helen complain that it took her two years for P.J. to put her in his will and now the kidnapper is going to get P.J.'s fortune. Vince suggests they kill P.J. before he pays the ransom. Harry slips off the roof that he and Nikki are on and lands atop a ceiling face overhead a local restaurant where a young boy pulls the lever and makes the fan go faster and faster.

That night, Vince and Helen "fix" the brakes on P.J.'s car.

The next day, Harry bursts into Eliot's office, declaring that Helen is the kidnapper and having an affair with Vince. Eliot is clearly distraught over the news, for he decides to continue to win over Helen's affections.

Later, Vince and Helen leave the mansion after seeing P.J. getting his car. However, Harry and Nikki ask to borrow the car. As Harry tails Helen and Vince, he confides to Nikki that he feels that he is is living in his father and grandfather's shadow and Nikki admits she feels jealous of her sister and always feels living in her shadow as well. Harry believes Jennifer should feel jealous of Nikki. As they go down a hill, the brakes give out. Harry steers between oncoming traffic until he hits Vince's car and locks fenders. Vince speeds up, dragging Harry with him until they hit a bump, sending Harry's car into a small orange tree.

After P.J.'s mechanic confirms the brakes were tampered with, Harry rightfully assumes that Helen and Vince were responsible, but he continues to mistakenly think that he was the intended victim, not P.J. Afterwords, Nikki tells her father she is helping Harry with his case. P. J. instructs her not to bother the detective, but Harry insists Nikki has been a great help.

Later, Harry disguises himself as an Indian air-conditioner repairman (complete with a turban and brown olive-colored face paint) and smuggles Nikki into Vince's apartment building in a large toolbox. Harry climbs up an air vent while Nikki directs him using a short-wave radio. He hears Vince and Helen talking but is unable to see them through the vent. Meanwhile, Eliot Draisen telephones from a booth outside the apartment and tells Vince he is late for a tennis lesson at the country club. When Vince leaves, Eliot enters the apartment and blackmails Helen for sex. While Helen goes to the bathroom freshen up, Eliot turns on the TV set and watches an old film-neoir movie in which the two characters discuss killing the woman's husband and absconding to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eliot voices his approval and decides to follow their example once he receives the ransom money. Harry, thinking it is Vince talking, works a camera through the vent to take photographs. During the lovemaking, Helen complains the room is too hot, so Eliot turns on the air conditioning causing Harry to be blown into the apartment manager's (Joe Flattery) office, knocking the manager unconscious.

That night, Eliot delivers another ransom note to the Downing mansion, stating the money must be paid by Friday, but Helen gets it first and alters it to read payment is due Monday (to give her and Vince more time to kill P.J.). The next day, Harry gives Eliot the photographs, claiming they show Vince and Helen engaging in sex. Eliot looks at them and is stunned to see himself coupling with Helen, but is amused and relieved that Harry seems ignorant. Harry admits he did not take time to look at the photos, and brags that he has so unnerved the kidnappers they have changed their plans and shows Eliot the altered ransom note. Harry then causes another accident when he gets on a stoic exercise bicycle and inadvertently releases the brake which cases the bicycle to crash into Eliot's dinosaur egg trophy shelf.

At the mansion, P.J. receives a phone call from Jennifer, while Harry, Eliot and Detective Casey listen in. Jennifer pleads that she will be killed if the drop is not made at noon today. Jennifer instructs that the ransom money be dropped off at a phone booth at the Hollywood Park horse racetrack. Casey suggests they bug the ransom money suitcase. Harry agrees to drop off the briefcase containing the ransom as long as police stay out of his way. As instructed, Harry goes to the racetrack disguised as a jockey (the world's fattest jockey!). Harry squeezes himself into a miniature telephone booth and receives a telephone call from Eliot to "give the money to Eliot Draisen". Eliot appears and takes the money, leaving Harry stuck in the booth. Nikki arrives and while struggling to get out of the phone booth, Harry tells her that he overheard the kidnappers' plans to fly to Buenos Aires. Making his getaway, Eliot tosses the "bug" out his car window to throw Detective Casey off his tail, then empties the suitcase of its cash and tosses it into a dumpster. Vince and Helen, who have been following Eliot, jump into the dumpster only to find the suitcase empty.

Eliot drives to the airport and telephones Helen, asking her to run away to Buenos Aires with him and the ransom money. She ditches Vince and rushes to Eliot. Once there, Helen confesses she was going to kill P.J. for the money, but now Eliot is rich and she is his. Vince appears with a pistol and Helen changes sides again. Eliot goes berserk, but Vince hits him in the head with the gun, drags him into a maintenance closet and chains him to a chair.

Harry and Nikki arrive at the airport but, forgetting he has a steel plate in his head, Harry is detained by security guards at the metal detector. As the plane taxis to the runway, Helen looks out to see Harry on a boarding stair truck driven by Nikki about to trash into the plane. Nikki loses control, hits a baggage cart, sending it into a power shed where Dwayne is holding Jennifer. The cart knocks Dwayne unconscious. Nikki crashes into the plane, throwing Harry through the plane boarding door. Vince pulls his gun, but Harry, who claims to know aikido, accidentally kicks his shoes off and into Vince's face, knocking him unconscious.

Later, as Detective Casey gives Harry a reluctant apology, they hear Eliot Draisen kicking the closet door. Harry then brags to Eliot about him not thinking that he would solve the case now that Jennifer is found. When Harry removes Eliot's gag, he angrily screams at Harry and inadvertently confesses to organizing the whole kidnapping and Eliot he cannot figure how a moron like Harry unearthed his kidnapping plan. A surprised Harry leaves the room and tells the nearby policemen to arrest and book Eliot.

Days later, Harry is made president of the company. He says goodbye to Nikki and P.J. Downing for his safe return of Jennifer. Nikki asks Harry if they could keep in touch should another case comes up, and Harry tells Nikki that he will let her know. After Nikki and her father leave, Harry sits down at his new desk in Eliot's former office. No sooner than as he relaxes at his new position, Harry receives a telephone call from someone asking him to come to San Francisco to help solve a murder in a gay bar. Harry agrees to take the case.

(Note: Harry Crumb's sexual orientation is never revealed or discussed in the movie, but there are hints throughout that Harry might be a closeted homosexual because of his tastes in various fashions, his curly red hair, his lack of interest in women, etc.)

In the final scene, Harry, disguising himself as a drag queen (strongly resembling drag artist Divine), walks out of his office to head to San Francisco and stops to tell his secretary that this is going to be a rough case. As Harry leaves for San Francisco, the glass door of Crumb and Crumb Investigations shatters as a final gag as the end credits roll.

Summary Harry and Tonto (1974)

When his apartment building is torn down, a retired lifelong New Yorker goes on a cross-country odyssey with his beloved cat Tonto.

Harry is a retired teacher in his 70s living in the Upper West Side of New York City, where his late wife and he raised his children, where he's lived all of his life. When the building, in which he lives, is torn down to make way for a parking garage, Harry and his beloved cat Tonto begin a journey across the U.S., visiting his children, seeing a world he never seemed to have the time to see before, making new friends, and saying goodbye to old friends.

Widowed septuagenarian Harry Coombes lives with his beloved cat Tonto in the same inner city New York City apartment he has for much of his adult life. So it is with great resistance that Harry moves from that apartment as his building is scheduled for immediate demolition. With no plans as to where to live, he and Tonto move in with his son Bert Coombes and his family in the suburbs. Independent minded Harry knows this situation is not either to his liking nor to Bert's wife's liking. Before making a decision as to a permanent living situation, Harry, with Tonto in tow, decides to visit his bookstore owning divorcée daughter Shirley Mallard in Chicago, Illinois. But the planned New York City to Chicago flight changes out of circumstances to a road trip. Along the way, Harry and Tonto meet a variety of people which affect his thoughts and ultimately where he goes, which includes a possible visit with Jessie Stone, an old flame he hasn't seen in fifty years, and a visit with his irresponsible playboy son Eddie Coombes in Los Angeles, California.

Synopsis Harry and Tonto (1974)

As elderly people go about their day in Manhattan, Harry walks along a sidewalk with his tabby cat Tonto on a leash, quoting Shakespeare's "King Lear" as he goes. Harry stops in at a grocer, buys some good food for his cat, and jokes that his sexual days are over.

Next Harry meets his old friend Jacob on a bench, and tells him that his apartment building is being torn down to build a parking lot. Jacob complains about capitalists, and reassures Harry that he could always move in with him.

On the way home, a kid tries to steal Harry's groceries and knocks him down. Harry is helped up by Leroy, his building super.

Harry gets into his apartment and talks to Tonto, lamenting that he's been mugged four times in the past year, and that the whole city is getting run down.

Some time later, police show up to forcibly remove Harry and his furniture from the building. Harry continues to spout "King Lear" while his son Burt arrives to pick him up.

Harry goes to live with Burt and his wife and two grown sons in the suburbs. His younger grandson, Norman, has taken a vow of silence, leading to obvious tension with his brother and parents. Harry later asks Norman for the books that explain his beliefs.

Harry goes back to his familiar bench to talk with Jacob, and they both agree it's been a long time since either has been with a woman. Jacob reminisces about his first sexual encounter with a servant girl when he was 14.

Harry invites Leroy to dinner at Burt's house, and he plays the piano while Leroy dances to the tune. Leroy later comments that he lives with his 90-year-old mother and can't find a new job, which leads Burt's wife to question why Harry is not getting help from his two other kids.

Knowing that he is a burden to Burt, Harry goes to look for his own apartment, but finds that the place he wants will not take cats. He then tells Burt he is going to Chicago to visit Shirley, Burt's sister, but before he leaves he stops at a city morgue to identify the body of Jacob, who has died with no relatives. Harry cries after recalling Jacob's story of losing his virginity.

Burt takes Harry to the airport, but Harry soon learns that he can't go through security with Tonto, so he takes a cab to get a bus. Along the route, Harry asks the bus driver to stop so that Tonto can relieve himself, whereupon the cat runs away across a cemetery. The bus driver leaves Harry behind with his luggage, and when Tonto returns, Harry scolds him.

Harry walks to a used car lot and buys an old Chevy for $250. He then checks into a motel and calls Burt to tell him what has happened, realizing in the process that his driver's license expired in 1958.

Harry drives west rather slowly, with Tonto on the dashboard, recalling how he wanted to drive across the country when he was younger, but his wife and kids came along. He remembers they had many good times though. He confesses to Tonto that he has a great fear of pain, and that when he dies he would like to go quickly rather than the slow way his wife Annie died.

Harry picks up two young hitchhikers, one of whom soon gets another ride, while the other a girl named Ginger continues west with Harry. She claims she is 16, and is running away from home to a commune in Boulder.

Harry and Ginger get a motel for the night, and after she comes out of the bathroom half-naked, Harry is prompted to recall the first girl he loved, Jessie, whom he has not seen in 50 years. Ginger suggests that they go to see her, even though it's out of their way, and they eventually find her in a nursing home.

At first Harry thinks Jessie remembers him, but her thoughts are marked by senility; she calls him Alex yet remembers his wife Annie. Then she suddenly asks Harry to dance, which they do while Ginger looks on.

Harry and Ginger make it to Chicago, where Shirley runs a bookstore. Harry is surprised to see Norman there, who has been sent in advance by Burt to meet him, and who is now talking. Shirley is curt with Harry and Ginger, and is mourning the end of her fourth marriage.

Shirley and Harry go for a walk by the edge of Lake Michigan, and she encourages him to return to teaching; he says he is too old. They have an awkward exchange, and agree to be more civil to each other.

Harry drives on with Norman and Ginger, reaching Arizona. Harry calls Burt and has Norman explain his situation, which does not go over well. Harry tells Burt he is moving on to Los Angeles to visit Eddie, his other son, while Norman tells Burt that he is going with Ginger to Boulder.

Harry thus gives the car to them, and wonders off to a motel, where he meets a traveling salesman of natural health products. While the man gives Harry a shoulder rub, he sells him a blender he does not need.

Harry hitchhikes and is picked up by hot redhead in convertible. She reveals she's a high-priced hooker, and asks Harry how long it's been since he had sex. He stammers, saying he does not think he's up to it and can't afford her, but when he mentions he has $100, she drives off the road and takes him up a hillside.

The hooker drops Harry off at a Las Vegas casino, where he has some drinks. A man at a craps table gets mad at him for cooling his win streak. Harry goes outside to give Tonto some milk, and begins to urinate against the building, whereupon police arrest him.

Harry wakes up in jail with a native Indian named Sam Two Feathers. Harry offers him the blender he recently bought, and Sam gives him a necklace in exchange. Harry asks Sam if he can cure ailments, and in exchange for relieving Harry of the bursitis in his shoulder, Sam selects a pair of Harry's underwear.

Harry finally makes it by bus to L.A., and walks along Hollywood Blvd. with Tonto, until his son Eddie drives by to pick him up. Eddie acts as if he's been living off his real estate deals, but when they get to his apartment, he confesses to his father that he is broke.

Eddie cries in shame, and Harry consoles him that they will somehow find a way to help each other financially. Harry can provide some money for now, he says, but he wants Eddie to get on with his own life.

Harry goes to the beach and enjoys a game a chess, during which Tonto suddenly does not look well.

Harry takes Tonto to an animal hospital, and says goodbye.

Harry goes to the beach to write a letter to Leroy, telling him that Tonto passed away at the age of 11, or 77 in human years. A woman named Celia, escorting many cats, comes to sit next to Harry, openly flirting with him. She soon suggests that they run around together, but Harry is distracted when he sees a tabby cat that looks like Tonto.

Harry follows the cat out onto the beach and pets it. There he sees a little girl building a sandcastle in the sunset, and he joins her.

Summary Harry's Game ()

Harry is an undercover agent for the British army sent to Northern Ireland to infiltrate the IRA and find (and terminate) the assassin of a British Cabinet Minister. Harry is alone, the army hasn't been told he is being put in place, his wife is fed up with him and his job, and his one new friend, an Irish woman who falls for him will be consumed by his relentless search for the assassin.

A British Cabinet Minister is gunned down outside his home in London by a member of the Provisional IRA. Security protocols are activated, but the assassin evades them and successfully escapes to Belfast. In the aftermath of the incident, rash decisions are made by politicians seeking revenge, and the Ministry of Defence responds by sending Captain Harry Brown - a special forces soldier who has done deep cover work in hostile territory - into the Falls Road area of Belfast, notorious for civil unrest and Republican activity. Harry's mission is to infiltrate the local nationalist population, uncover the identity of the assassin, and kill him in his own neighborhood - proving to the IRA that they are not safe, even in their "own back yard". But as his relentless search becomes more desperate, an innocent girl's life is claimed. The IRA soon realizes they have an informant in their area and brings in the same assassin, Billy Downes, to hunt down Harry. The situation develops into a deadly game of cat and mouse in which more innocent lives will be affected and neither side can win.
